Mistakes People Make with Marketing

By admin | July 8, 2011

There are many mistakes people make when marketing their business, which can be damaging to an image and be a waste of money.  Some of the biggest mistakes with marketing include targeting the wrong audience, not being culturally sound, and having a poor website.

One of the biggest mistakes that a company makes with marketing efforts is targeting the wrong audience.  When marketing a product or an entire company, it is important to know the demographics of the customer.  The demographics include the customer’s budget and if the products you offer are affordable.  The age group of the audience makes a big difference.  Consider age, budget, where they live, and if the customers would be interested in what you are offering.  It would be silly to try and get a group of customers to buy your product if it is too expensive for them to afford.  In addition, targeting the wrong audience on the web can occur and you might not even know it.  You might be selling electronics but when people search for things like United States immigration, they are pulling your site up with US Visas and other sites offering USCIS forms.

Another mistake businesses make with a business is not being culturally sound.  Most businesses offend people in other countries and they don’t even realize they do it.  If you have symbols or pictures of people making hand gestures on your website or in an advertisement, always ensure these things are not offensive.  It may be something simple to you but offensive to an entire country.  This can give a business a poor image and cause you to have a bad reputation.  Always be culturally sound with your advertisements.  It is best to avoid symbols and gestures or even sayings with your advertisements, unless you are willing to take the time to research everything.

A poor website can cause serious problems with a business and the marketing efforts.  A bad website can be a problem for a business and give absolutely no results with sales.  The goal of a website is to generate sales.  A website can help a business improve business by increasing a worldwide customer base and make a ton of money.  If your website is not built properly, it will not appear in search engines and available to people who are looking for the products you offer.  A poor website can include broken links.  If a customer is trying to purchase products on your site but the shopping cart doesn’t work, you will lose all of your purchases and a lot of money.

Marketing is essential to a successful business, but if you are not marketing properly, you will be wasting your time and your money.  Marketing includes building a website that is fully functional, culturally sound, and targeting the appropriate audience.  Always consider your customers and who they are.  The better you know the customers, the better you will do with your marketing efforts.  Marketing is one of the most important factors of a successful business.
